Durban Born, Johannesburg resident. As the founder and primary songwriter for Leo Roland and the Fireverse, Leo is the storyteller at the heart of the music. A Services Director by day and a musician by passion, Leo turned forty in 2025 with a renewed focus on capturing the complexities of life—from the enduring love of his 13-year marriage to the deep grief of losing his best friend of thirty years.
Leo’s sound is built on a foundation of acoustic roots and lyrical honesty, heavily influenced by the narrative style of Wesley Schultz (The Lumineers). Working primarily from his home studio, he embraces a modern production workflow, blending raw acoustic instrumentation with forward-thinking digital tools to create the high-fidelity sound found on the band’s albums, It's Showtime (2025) and Face the Music (2026).
While The Fireverse is fundamentally a studio project by Six Musicians scattered accross the Republic of South Africa, it is dedicated to crafting immersive audio experiences, Leo has taken the music to the stage for special occasions. Most notably, in mid-October 2025, the band performed as the opening act for a major tribute band in Pretoria, showcasing their songs to a live audience.
"I write to make sense of the world. Whether it's the joy of a long love or the pain of a sudden goodbye, I want the Fireverse to be a place where people feel those stories with me."
Based in Cape Town, Nick provides the essential rhythmic heartbeat of Leo Roland and the Fireverse. Despite the physical distance from the band's Gauteng base, his presence in the music is immediate and driving.
Nick’s drumming is defined by an intuitive balance of power and restraint—he knows exactly when to thunder and when to whisper. Whether sending files from the coast for studio albums like Face the Music or joining the band live on stage, Nick bridges the gap with a percussion style that seamlessly transitions from intimate acoustic moments to anthemic highs. He is the reliable engine that locks the Fireverse sound together.
"The beat isn't just about keeping time; it's about moving the story forward. No matter where I am, every hit has to mean something."
Operating out of Cape Town, Kitty brings a distinct elegance and emotional depth to the Fireverse. She is a multi-instrumentalist whose violin and percussion work add the cinematic texture that defines the band’s studio sound.
Vocally, Kitty is not in the background. While Jason handles the backing harmonies, Kitty’s voice serves as a direct complement to Leo’s lead, creating a dynamic vocal partnership that shapes the narrative of the songs. This chemistry is perhaps most evident in her collaboration with Leo on the sequel to LRDEE's "Flicker and Flame (Her Version)," where her influence was pivotal.
(She goes by Katrina or Kitty—but whatever you do, don't call her Kat.)
"I don't just want to support the melody; I want to help tell the other side of the story."
Jason is the band’s resident American, anchoring the low end of the Fireverse from his base in Cape Town. As the bassist, he provides the deep, driving grooves that give the music its pulse, but his versatility really shines through in his vocal work.
Jason is the band's vocal utility player. He is responsible for the rich backing vocals that fill out the studio sound, providing the harmonies that complimented Leo’s lead on the It's Showtime album. He also proved he can command the microphone himself, stepping into the spotlight to take lead vocal duties on the track "Pre-Wash" from the Face the Music album. Whether he is laying down a bass line, singing harmony, or taking the lead, Jason is essential to the band's dynamic range.
"The bass moves the feet, but the harmony moves the heart. I try to make sure we're doing both."
Luyanda brings a sophisticated harmonic texture to Leo Roland and the Fireverse. Based in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, he acts as the band's sonic architect, layering the music with everything from delicate piano lines to atmospheric synth pads.
His playing bridges the gap between the organic acoustic guitar and the modern production elements the band employs. Luyanda isn't just an instrumentalist, however; he is a powerful vocalist in his own right. He notably co-sang the track "Men of War" with Leo, adding a distinct and soulful presence that deepened the song's emotional resonance.
"The keys can be the ground you stand on or the sky above you. I try to paint the atmosphere so the story has a place to live."
Based in Pretoria, Danie is the technical virtuoso of the group. A veteran of the tribute band circuit, he brings a high level of precision and adaptability to the Fireverse.
Danie is responsible for the electric guitar textures that give the band its modern edge, but his role extends well beyond amplification. He is the "stunt guitarist" for the acoustic sections, stepping in to execute the complex, intricate acoustic riffs that overlay Leo’s rhythmic foundation. This division of labour allows the songs to maintain a rich, multi-layered guitar sound without sacrificing the vocal focus.
"My job is to fill the spaces. Whether it's an electric swell or a fast acoustic run, I'm there to make sure the guitar work sings just as much as the vocals do."
Benji
Band Mascot, Muse
Every band needs a soul, and for Leo Roland and the Fireverse, that soul has floppy ears and a tail that never stops wagging. Benji, Leo's beloved Cocker Spaniel, is more than just a pet; he is a central figure in the band's daily life and creative process.
Always present during the long hours of writing and production, Benji provides the silent support (and occasional distraction) that keeps the studio vibes grounded. His impact on the music is literal as well as emotional—he is the inspiration behind his very own track, immortalized in song as a tribute to his loyalty and character.
"Woof." (Translation: "I'm just here for the good vibes and the treats.")
